A trip to Helsinki
Welcome to the biggest city and capital of Finland. It is full of art, unique design and culture. It is known for its friendly citizens, relaxing atmosphere and is even said to be the happiest country in the world!
Helsinki is not like most other capitals… It is an archipelago of 330 islands by the Baltic Sea, which makes for a lot of opportunities for adventure.
What to experience
There are so many things to do and see in this city. From exploring the Helsinki Cathedral to joyful boat rides around the islands – your options are definitely not limited. Helsinki offers many options for adventure, and we have collected some of our favorites below.
Senate Square: The Square is located centrally in the city, and together with the surrounding area it is the oldest part of Helsinki. It is the most popular public space in the city, and it is inspired by the style of Sankt Petersburg in Russia.
Helsinki Cathedral: this is one of the biggest attractions in the city. It is also the landmark for the city – which is why it is a must-see. The beautiful white building looks over the Senate Square.
Kiasma Museum: this is the biggest museum in the city for contemporary art, with a collection of more than 8000 art pieces. It focuses primarily on present contemporary art by artists from Finland and nearby countries.
Löyly Sauna: it is almost impossible to visit the city without going to a sauna! The sauna culture is very big in Helsinki, there are actually more than 2 million saunas in the city. Most hotels will have a sauna, but if you are looking for something a little different then Löyly offers modern saunas right by the ocean.
Esplanadi Park: this park is also known as Espa, and it is another one of the most popular attractions in the city. This city park is laid out as a promenade and it makes up a wonderful green place for people to breathe in the center of the big city.
Where to live
There are a lot of really great areas in Helsinki, with a ton of accommodation options for all budgets. The city offers a stylish and dynamic feel with beautiful architecture. Its many boulevards and neighborhoods offer amazing restaurants, shops and bars.
Kluuvi: this district is found at the center of the city. It is a great place to stay for first-timers, as it is right in the middle of everything. It is especially known for its cultural scene, housing the National Theater, the Music Centre, Ateneum Museum and much more.
Kamppi: this district is known for its huge shopping centers, such as Kamppi Shopping Center and Hietalahti flea market. It is also a great place for the party animals, as it is big on nightlife – you will most likely find a party on every corner.
Kaartinkaupunki: this urban and trendy area in the south of the city center is great, especially if you are traveling with family. You will find amazing museums and green open areas. You can also visit the beautiful Rikhardinkatu Library, which is known for its architecture or the Erottaja Rescue Station – the oldest active fire station in the country.
Katajanokka: this charming island is found on the eastern shore of the city center. It is sort of a hidden treasure, because not many visitors know about it. The island has a lot of unique things to see, such as the largest Orthodox Cathedral in western Europe.
